Police & Thieves

My family are from Jamaica and the first time I went “back home” as my parents still call JA, was in 1975.
The big tune on the island was “Police & Thieves” by Junior Murvin, this morning I heard the sad news about his passing, and thought it appropriate to write R.I.P on my Facebook status. Why?
Well having a Jamaican heritage, music has played a huge part in my life, in fact my earliest memory is of my mother rocking me to sleep at a party in my childhood home in Brixton :).

In 1975, Jamaica was at the beginning of the downward spiral that has seen this beautiful island be labelled a Third World country. Corruption, politics, guns, religion, police and thieves…………………………….Junior Murvin’s “Police & Thieves” captured the vibes perfectly. R.I.P and thanks for the memories.

Today, I began speaking to my children about their wishes for Christmas 2013 – my son wants the “new thinner, lighter, iPad Air”.

Tips on Tuesday – Wake Up Denmark!

Someone’s opinion of you does not have to be your reality! #fact

National television in Denmark (DR) scored another own goal with the programme “Sort Arbejde” using racially offensive images as content rather than historical artifacts. I guess that this is another “we don’t mean anything by it” kind of situation.
When will they learn that these opinions are outdated and offensive?

“Most Dane’s pride themselves of being non-racists and I know many who are not. However, deep in our culture is an underlying acceptance of racist behavior, sayings and not least outlook. That the national TV channel don’t see a problem with this, is an example of how widely this is accepted in our culture. What saddens me the most is that it is so deep in our culture that most people don’t even realize how racist they behave.” – Chris Minh Doky

Antwerp

On Wednesday afternoon, I held a Q&A session with the MA Fashion students at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and then saw a brilliant retrospective exhibition celebrating their 50th Anniversary in the Fashion Museum.
Yesterday, I held a short lecture on “Working in and motivating a fashion team.”
Now preparing to go home after a wonderful few days in Antwerp.

Little Ghetto Boy

I love debate! Last Saturday morning when I read the “Debate” section in Politiken (Danish newspaper), I knew that the words of an 18 year old, Yahya Hassan was going to create a storm. Yahya Hassan’s words relating to his upbringing in a Danish ghetto, his feeling of Muslim’s refusal to accept Danish culture, a violent father and his subsequent criminal activity.

Yesterday, I watched his TV appearance online Deadline via http://www.dr.dk/tv/se/deadline/deadline-400#!/17:38. Generalisation? Integration? Whatever happened to freedom of speech?
And this morning, it’s been confirmed that he has gone underground after receiving numerous death threats.

Anyway, this little gem, “Little Ghetto Boy” is dedicated to you, Yahya Hassan. Stay safe, wherever you may be and thanks for bringing the debate to the table.

George Carlin

Last weekend, I stumbled across a film called, “Human Stain” from 2003, which immediately caught my attention, it stars Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman. I won’t give away too much about the story, but can highly recommend it –  as it involves racism, love, blacks, jews, domestic violence and divorce.
“The caterpillar does all the work but the butterfly gets all the publicity.”

“Just cause you got the monkey off your back doesn’t mean the circus has left town.”

And the classic George Carlin video, via YouTube

Sun on Sunday

On Friday evening, I won a “fake” Eames rocking chair and as I am not a fan or replica furniture I refused to sit in it after discovering that it was a copy on Sat. morning. Not sure whether I should have been disappointed with CPH Blonde and Velorbis for their blatant use of plagiarism when using the term “designer furniture” – anyway, my 8 year old son is very happy for the chair, so it will have pride of place in his bedroom.

My children went back to their mother’s apartment today after 5 wonderful days, it’s always a pleasure to have them and interesting how much young people change every 9 days :). This afternoon, I played football as a guest in the Father vs Son game, and yes, I was on the father’s team – we won 6-3 and I scored 2 goals and had 2 assists. What really surprised me was how much experience and tactical awareness was more profitable than speed and dribbling skills.

I can sense that this week is going to involve a lot of change!
